Councilor Contemplations – September 2023

by Sara Bollinger – Manlius Deputy Supervisor

Special Election to Establish Wards

A Special Election was held on September 23rd . Absentee ballots were accepted and counted. Long lines formed causing some voters to wait over two hours. The result formally released by Town Clerk Allison Weber who, with her staff, worked hard to make this election as efficient and inclusive as possible was Yes 890 No 2105. The Town thanks the Onondaga County Board of Elections for their assistance running the election. The Town Board will advocate with our NYS representatives to change the State Laws governing Special Elections which are cumbersome and out of date.

Technology Upgrades

The Town Board approved an update to the Town’s accounting software. This will take several months to implement. A Work Session was held on 9/27 for presentations on two constituent communication platforms offering an app or text option. Twin Ponds

The Town is considering a large apartment development on North Burdick Street. The Public Hearing was held open. If you have comments, please share them.

Police Officer at a Private School

The Town of Manlius Police Department provides armed, on-duty officers at all the public schools in the ESM and F-M districts. The Immaculate Conception private school has asked for the same service. This appears to be in contradiction to the NYS Constitution. The discussion will be continued.
